The story of Anna Mary Robertson Moses reminds us that creativity and purpose don’t expire with age. Sometimes a new chapter begins simply by returning to something we love.

For most of her life, Anna Mary Robertson Moses lived a quiet and hardworking life on farms in rural New York. She raised children, managed a household, and spent many years doing embroidery—something she loved.
But as she grew older, arthritis made embroidery too painful for her hands.
So at the age of 78, she tried something new.
She picked up a paintbrush.
She didn’t begin painting because she expected recognition or success. She simply missed the joy of making things. When one creative path closed, she found another.
What followed was remarkable. Over time, her paintings captured scenes of rural life and were eventually displayed in museums around the world. She created more than 1,500 paintings and continued working well into her later years.
Yet the real lesson isn’t about fame. It’s about the quiet decision to keep expressing who you are.
Retirement often creates space in our lives—space that once belonged to schedules, responsibilities, and routines. That space can be an invitation to rediscover the things that once brought us joy.
Not to be perfect. Not to impress anyone.
Simply to create again.
Reflection question:
What is one creative activity you once loved that you could revisit, even for just a few minutes today?
