Drawing on the wisdom of Seneca, this episode reminds us that retirement gives us a rare gift: unstructured time. The way we choose to spend it shapes the richness of our days.

Nearly 2,000 years ago, Seneca observed a truth that resonates today: people are busy, distracted, and often spend their days on things that don’t truly matter. He wrote, “It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste much of it. Life is long enough… if it were all well invested.”
Retirement gives us a gift that few in history have had—hours and days that belong to us. No one is scheduling meetings, assigning projects, or deciding how we spend our mornings. Yet unstructured time can slip away just as quickly as busy time. A morning scrolling the news, an afternoon in front of the television, a week that passes without a single moment that feels truly yours—these are the quiet traps of freedom.
Seneca isn’t telling us to hustle. He’s encouraging intentionality. Time well chosen adds meaning, even in small doses.
Small step for today:
Write down three things you want to do today—moments that matter to you, not errands. Maybe a walk, a conversation, or reading a chapter of a book. Make at least one of them happen before the day ends.
Reflection question:
Which small moments today can you claim as truly yours?
