Discover the simple yet powerful idea of ikigai—a reason to wake up each day—and how connecting to small, meaningful roles can enrich your retirement years.

In Okinawa, Japan, many elders live long, fulfilling lives. Researchers often point to diet, exercise, and climate—but the locals highlight something deeper: ikigai, the reason to rise each morning. Unlike when work structured your day, retirement brings freedom and, sometimes, uncertainty. What gives you purpose now?

Purpose doesn’t have to be monumental. It can be as simple as tending a garden, helping a neighbor, or celebrating a grandchild’s small victories. What matters is staying connected to something meaningful, something that gives your day shape and significance.

Today, try a small, reflective exercise: write down the sentence, “Tomorrow morning, I am getting up because…” Place it where you will see it first thing. Let it be a gentle reminder that your days are guided not by obligations but by the joy and meaning you choose to embrace.

Reflection: What role or activity makes your heart a little lighter, your mind a little sharper, or your spirit a little brighter each day? Even small acts of purpose create richness in your retirement journey.
