A powerful question invites a new perspective in retirement: what do you truly want to do with your life now? This stage of life can be less about proving something—and more about giving yourself permission to live on your own terms.

Sometimes a simple question can stay with us for years.

Poet Mary Oliver once wrote a line that has become famous: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Many people first hear this question when they are young. Back then, it can sound like a challenge—an invitation to achieve, accomplish, and prove something to the world.

But later in life, the same question can feel very different.

Instead of pressure, it can feel like permission.

After decades of responsibilities—careers, families, schedules, expectations—you may finally have the freedom to ask a quieter question: What do I actually want?

Maybe it’s reading on the porch without checking the clock. Maybe it’s taking that trip you kept postponing. Maybe it’s simply saying “no” to things that no longer fit your life.

Your life is still wild because it belongs to you. It’s precious because you are here to live it today.

A gentle step for this morning: give yourself permission for one small thing you’ve been wanting to do—but felt you needed to justify.

You may find that freedom often begins with a simple decision to honor what matters to you.

Reflection:
What is one thing you’d enjoy today if you didn’t feel the need to explain it to anyone?
