Episode 11: The Crack
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Moments of brokenness can feel uncomfortable, but they often become the places where growth, connection, and wisdom enter our lives. Sometimes the very cracks we wish away are the openings for something new.

There’s a powerful line from singer and songwriter Leonard Cohen:
“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”
At first, that idea may sound poetic—but also a little unsettling. Most of us spend a lifetime trying to hide the cracks in our lives. A health setback. Financial worries. A strained relationship. A moment when our confidence feels shaken.
Our instinct is to smooth over those places and pretend everything is fine.
But this perspective invites a different way of seeing things.
The crack may not be the failure. It may be the opening.
Often, the moments that feel most difficult are the ones that bring unexpected gifts: a conversation that deepens a friendship, compassion we didn’t know we had, or the humility that helps us ask for help.
In the retirement years especially, life doesn’t need to look perfect to be meaningful. Strength isn’t the absence of cracks—it’s the willingness to live honestly with them.
A gentle step for today: Think of one area of your life that feels a little “cracked” right now. Instead of trying to fix it immediately or hide it, simply acknowledge it.
Sometimes recognition is the first place where light begins to enter.
Reflection:
What challenge in your life might be quietly opening the door to something meaningful?
