Episode 25: What You Already Have
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Real wealth is not measured by how much we possess, but by how little we truly need. When we narrow the gap between our wants and what we already have, life can feel far richer.

The philosopher Epictetus began life with almost nothing. Born into slavery in ancient Rome, he had no rights, no possessions, and lived with a permanent injury that left him limping. Yet his words have endured for nearly two thousand years.
One of his most powerful insights is surprisingly simple: “Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.”
That idea can feel especially meaningful in the retirement years. Many people notice things that seem to be shrinking—savings being used instead of growing, the body slowing down, social circles becoming smaller.
It’s easy for the mind to focus on what feels like loss.
But Epictetus offers a different lens. Wealth isn’t just about the size of what we have. It’s about the distance between what we have and what we believe we need.
When our wants grow endlessly, even abundance can feel insufficient. But when our wants become simpler, the life we already have begins to feel surprisingly full.
Often, the essentials are already present: a safe place to live, a new day to experience, and at least one person who would answer the phone if we called.
A simple step for today:
Make two lists: What I Need and What I Have. Compare them quietly and see what you notice.
Reflection Question:
How might your sense of wealth change if you focused more on what you already have than on what you still want?
Sometimes the richest life begins with needing a little less. That’s your morning step.
