Episode 27: The Art of Noticing
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Gratitude begins with noticing what is already around us. When we slow down and give our full attention to ordinary moments, they often reveal quiet beauty we’ve been walking past for years.

When was the last time you truly looked at the sky?
Not a quick glance while heading to the car. Not a quick check for rain. But a real pause—the kind of attention you gave the world when you were a child, when clouds and light felt endlessly interesting.
Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped noticing. Life became busy, routines formed, and familiar things faded into the background like wallpaper.
The philosopher Simone Weil once wrote that attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity. In many ways, gratitude grows from that same skill. It’s difficult to feel thankful for something we never fully notice.
In retirement, one of the quiet gifts of this stage of life is the chance to slow down enough to truly see again. The light across the kitchen counter in the morning. The sound of a neighbor laughing. The simple weight of a good book in your hands.
These small details have always been there. Often they’re just waiting for our attention.
When we pause long enough to notice them, ordinary moments begin to feel rich again.
A simple step for today:
Spend one minute outside noticing three things you’ve never paid attention to before.
Reflection Question:
What small detail in your daily surroundings might reveal something beautiful if you slowed down to truly see it?
Sometimes a richer life begins simply by paying attention. That’s your morning step.
