Many gratitude practices lead to the same simple truth: life is happening in this moment. By pausing and becoming fully present, we reconnect with the life that is already unfolding around us.

After leaving academic life in the 1960s, psychologist Richard Alpert traveled to India searching for deeper meaning. When he returned, he carried a new name—Ram Dass—and a simple philosophy that would resonate with millions: Be here now.
Three small words, yet they hold a powerful reminder.
Throughout this gratitude series, many different ideas have surfaced—seeing the world with new eyes, emptying the cup, noticing small mercies, expressing thanks, and appreciating what we already have. Each of these practices leads to the same place: the present moment.
Because the truth is, life only happens here.
Not yesterday, which we can only remember.
Not tomorrow, which we can only imagine.
But right here, in the quiet details of this moment—the room you’re sitting in, the breath you just took, the simple fact that another day has begun.
Ram Dass practiced this mindset even through illness and physical decline. Presence wasn’t a slogan for him. It was a discipline: choosing to stay with life as it is, rather than wishing to be somewhere else.
For many people in retirement, this may be one of the most meaningful skills to cultivate—learning to be fully present for the life we’ve been given.
A simple step for today:
Set one alarm today. When it rings, pause, take three slow breaths, and remind yourself: I am here. I am now.
Reflection Question:
How might your day feel different if you paused more often to fully experience the moment you’re in?
Sometimes the most meaningful place to stand is simply right where you are. That’s your morning step.
