Episode 28: The Gratitude Muscle

Gratitude isn’t just a reaction to good events—it’s a practice that shapes how we experience life. When we choose to notice what we’re thankful for, even on ordinary days, happiness often follows.

Many people think gratitude arrives only after something good happens. A positive doctor’s report, a pleasant phone call, or an unexpected bit of good news can certainly spark thankfulness.
But what about the quieter days? The mornings when nothing remarkable happens, when the body aches a little and the news feels heavy.
The Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast offered a powerful insight: “It is not happiness that makes us grateful. It is gratefulness that makes us happy.”
In other words, gratitude doesn’t always follow happiness. Often, it creates it.
When we choose to practice gratitude—even on ordinary days—we begin training our attention to notice what is still good. Over time, this practice becomes a kind of inner strength. Like a muscle, it grows stronger the more we use it.
And when life becomes difficult, that muscle is already there to support us.
A simple gratitude journal can be a powerful tool for this. Writing down a few things you’re thankful for each day not only brightens the moment—it creates a record of perspective you can return to during harder seasons.
A simple step for today:
Write down one thing you’re grateful for this morning. Repeat the practice tomorrow.
Reflection Question:
What small moment from yesterday might deserve a place in your gratitude list today?
Gratitude grows stronger each time you practice it. That’s your morning step.
