We often spend our time thinking about the past or worrying about the future. But life is only truly experienced in the present moment, and learning to be fully here can transform even the simplest parts of the day.

It’s surprisingly easy for the mind to wander away from the present moment. Even while listening to something meaningful, part of our attention may be replaying yesterday’s conversation or planning tomorrow’s tasks.

In many ways, we spend much of our lives living in time that isn’t now.

The Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh spent decades teaching a simple but profound truth: life is available only in the present moment. The past exists as memory, and the future exists as possibility. But the moment you’re actually living—the warmth of the cup in your hand, the quiet rhythm of your breathing, the light coming through the window—is happening right now.

Yet we often treat the present like a hallway between yesterday and tomorrow, rushing through it to get somewhere else.

But what if the hallway is actually the room?

In retirement, there is a gentle opportunity to slow down and experience life more fully. Even ordinary moments—drinking coffee, preparing lunch, washing your hands—can become meaningful when you give them your full attention.

Presence doesn’t require complicated techniques. Sometimes it simply means arriving where you already are.

A simple step for today:
Choose one everyday activity and do it with complete attention—no phone, no distractions. Simply notice the experience.

Reflection Question:
What part of your day might feel richer if you gave it your full attention?

Life is happening right here, in this moment. That’s your morning step.
