Episode 32: Afraid and Doing It Anyway
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Two people can stand at the exact same door. One sees only the fear waiting on the other side. The other sees the fear, and reaches for the handle anyway.
Eleanor Roosevelt didn't begin her public life as someone unshaken by criticism or judgment. In her early years, she carried real anxiety about being seen, being watched, being wrong in front of others. And yet she kept walking into rooms that scared her, again and again.
She once wrote that we gain strength, courage, and confidence through every experience in which we truly stop to look fear in the face — that we must do the very thing we believe we cannot do.
Most of us carry a quiet misunderstanding about courage. We picture it as the absence of fear — as though brave people simply stopped feeling afraid somewhere along the way, and that's what let them move forward. But that isn't courage. That's a myth we've told ourselves for comfort.
Real courage looks much less polished than that. It's the trembling hand that still reaches for the doorknob. It's the voice that cracks but says the true thing anyway. Fear doesn't quietly step aside to let you pass — you step forward first, fear tagging along uninvited, until somewhere down the road, it simply gets tired of following.
Whatever feels too large to face this morning — a conversation you've rehearsed and re-rehearsed, an appointment you keep pushing back, a change you've been circling from a safe distance — none of it requires the fear to leave first. It only asks you to move while the fear is still standing right beside you.

A simple step for today:
Name one thing you've been avoiding because it scares you. Then do the smallest possible version of it — not the whole thing, just the beginning. If it's a conversation, write the first sentence. If it's a phone call, simply dial.
Reflection Question:
What's one small, brave thing you could do today — not once the fear is gone, but while it's still here?
You don't have to wait to feel fearless. You only have to move first. That's your morning step.
