Nobody warns you that the loudest voice at sixty isn't doubt, or grief — it's a dog that's barked at the mailman for thirty years and still thinks it's saving your life.

Fear has one job, and it's terrible at knowing when to stop. It wants you seated, home, the visit skipped, the trip cancelled — because what's known, however stale, feels safer than what hasn't happened yet. Fear isn't lying to you. It genuinely believes this is protection. It's a guard dog that never learned the difference between a stranger at the door and wind through the trees. It just barks. At the mailman, the neighbors, the wind.

Elizabeth Gilbert spent years studying the friction between fear and creativity, and landed on this: fear is triggered by creativity because creativity walks into uncertain outcomes, and uncertainty is the one thing fear cannot stand. Not danger. Uncertainty. To the guard dog, those register as the same threat, no matter how many times you've proven otherwise.

So next time hesitation shows up — before a new routine, an unfamiliar plan, a relationship or trip — remember: that flicker usually isn't proof of danger. It's proof of newness. Nine times out of ten, nearly every good thing that's entered your life arrived through exactly that kind of uncertainty.

Your job was never to silence the barking. It's to notice what the dog is reacting to, thank it, and open the door anyway.

_

A simple step for today:
Next time you feel small fear today — hesitation before speaking, nervousness before a plan — pause and ask: is this dangerous, or just new? If just new, take one small step toward it.

Reflection question:
Where has the guard dog been barking at something never actually dangerous — just unfamiliar?

Thank the dog. Then open the door anyway. That's your morning step.
