You wouldn't try three hundred pounds on your very first day at the gym. So why do we expect ourselves to feel brave before we've done a single rep?

_

Nobody would walk into a gym for the first time and load the bar with three hundred pounds. You'd start with a weight you could actually handle, add a little more each week, build a little more endurance each month — the muscle grows because you keep asking it to do something slightly harder than it did the last time. Brené Brown, who has spent two decades studying vulnerability and shame and what it actually takes to live bravely, is often quoted saying you can choose courage or you can choose comfort, but you cannot choose both.

Here's what struck me about that. We tend to think brave people were simply born that way — that courage is a fixed trait, like being tall or having brown eyes. But Brown's research says the opposite is true: courage is a practice, built in small, unglamorous reps. Every uncomfortable conversation you have instead of avoiding it — that's a rep. Every time you try something new and risk looking foolish — that's a rep. Every time you say "I don't know" instead of pretending you do — that's a rep too.

And here's the part that matters most for this chapter of your life: you have been building this muscle for decades already. Every hard thing you've survived was a rep. Every loss you carried and kept standing through was a rep. You are not walking into this gym for the first time. The muscle has been there all along. You just need to keep using it.

_

A simple step for today:
Do one small brave thing today. Speak up when you'd normally stay quiet. Try something you might not be good at, and try it anyway. Say the honest thing instead of the easy one. It doesn't need to be dramatic — it just needs to be a rep.

Reflection question:
Looking back over your life, what's one hard thing you survived that you've never given yourself credit for as an act of courage?

You're not starting from zero. You never were. That's your morning step.
