The treasure was never hidden in the village you've always known. It was always waiting in the exact cave you've spent years walking past.

Joseph Campbell spent his entire life studying myths — the ancient stories every civilization has told about heroes and their journeys — and he found the same pattern buried in every single one, across every culture, every century. There's always a moment where the hero has to leave the known world behind and step into the unknown. The safe village sits behind them. The dark forest waits ahead. And every hero, without exception, hesitates right at that threshold.

He's often credited with a line that captures that exact moment: the cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek. Say that one again, slowly, because it's easy to let it slide past. The thing you're most afraid to do is almost always the thing carrying the most reward. The conversation you keep avoiding might be the one that heals a relationship. The change you keep resisting might be the very thing that opens the next decade of your life. The vulnerability you keep hiding from might be exactly what finally brings you real connection.

Campbell isn't promising the cave won't be dark or frightening once you're inside it. He's telling you the treasure was never on the comfortable path you're already walking. It's in the cave.

Here's the part worth remembering this morning: you've already been the hero of your own story for a long time. Marriage. Parenthood. Career changes you didn't see coming. Loss you didn't think you'd survive. Reinvention more than once. You already know how to stand at an edge and leap — you've done it your entire life. This chapter is only asking you to do it one more time.

A simple step for today:
Name your cave. What's the one thing you want most, but feel most afraid to pursue? Write it down — you don't have to walk inside today. Just name it. Look at it on paper.

Reflection question:
What treasure have you been walking past for years, simply because the cave guarding it looked too dark to enter?

The treasure doesn't move. It'll be there when you're ready to step inside. That's your morning step.
