The bravest thing you can say to someone in pain isn't "here's what you should do." It's four words that ask for nothing back: "I am thinking of you."

There's an instinct most of us can't switch off when someone we love is hurting — we scramble for the fix, the wisdom, the sentence that will finally make the ache stop. As if the right words were a surgical tool we just haven't located yet. But some wounds don't respond to instruments. Some only respond to someone willing to sit in the dark room with you and not reach for the light switch.

Henri Nouwen, a Dutch priest who spent decades sitting with the dying and the grieving, learned this the hard way — through sitting with people who had nothing left, including answers. He wrote that a friend who can stay silent with you in confusion, who can tolerate not fixing, not curing, not knowing, and simply face your powerlessness alongside you — that friend is the one who actually loves you. Most people flinch away from that kind of stillness. It feels like failing someone. It isn't.

We've been taught that love sounds like solutions. But the deepest love rarely does. It looks like a hand resting on a shoulder, saying nothing at all. It looks like someone in the waiting room beside you who never once glances at their phone. It looks like a friend on the other end of the line admitting, "I don't have the right words, but I'm here anyway." That kind of presence is far rarer than advice — anyone can hand you advice. Almost no one can sit beside your dark without flinching toward the light switch. That person is the gift.

A simple step for today:
Think of someone in your life currently carrying something heavy. Reach out today — not with advice, not with a fix, not with "let me know if you need anything." Just say: "I'm thinking of you. I'm here." That's the entire language of presence. It's already enough.

Reflection question:
Who in your life needs your silence today more than they need your solutions?

That's your morning step.
