Episode 42: Love That Keeps Moving

Some mornings the hardest thing to carry isn't the empty chair. It's the love that used to have somewhere to go and now doesn't.

There's a specific kind of person I want to speak to this morning — the one who lost someone and is still standing there, holding all the love that person left behind, not knowing what to do with it. Because that's the part nobody prepares you for. The absence isn't actually the hardest thing about grief. It's the presence — of love that's still fully alive, still real, still wanting somewhere to land, and finding nowhere to go.
Writer Jamie Anderson put words to this that are worth sitting with: grief, she said, is really just love — all the love you still want to give but can't, gathering in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, the hollow space behind your ribs. Grief is love with no destination left.
But here's what's true, even on the hardest mornings: that love was never wasted, and it still isn't. It lives in the way you still set the table a certain way. In the song you keep playing because it was theirs. In the stories you tell your grandchildren about someone they'll never meet but will somehow still know, because you made sure of it. That love doesn't actually need the original person in order to keep moving. It just needs you to keep handing it somewhere.
It can go into a letter to their oldest friend. Into a donation made in their name. Into the kindness you show a total stranger, simply because it's the same kindness they once showed you. The love isn't stuck. It's just waiting for you to give it a new address.

A simple step for today:
If you're carrying love for someone who's gone, find one place to put it today. Do something they would have done. Give what they would have given. Say the kind thing they would have said. Let the love keep moving — that's how they stay alive in this world.
Reflection question:
Where could you send some of that love today — a person, a place, a small act — that would let it keep moving instead of sitting still?
That's your morning step.
