The Table That Held More Truth Than Any Courtroom: Why Filling One Empty Seat Still Has Power
Every house has a courtroom that never issued a verdict and a confessional that never charged admission — it's usually somewhere near the refrigerator, with mismatched chairs.

Some homes have a favorite living room. Some have a porch worth defending in an argument. But in nearly every family, the real center of gravity is the kitchen table — the place where homework got finished under protest, where bills got sorted at midnight, where arguments broke out and, eventually, mended themselves. It's the table someone sat at with a cold cup of tea and a worry too big to sleep through. That surface has absorbed more honesty than any courtroom and held more love than most sanctuaries ever will.
As the years pass, that same table has a way of going quiet. Children scatter. Chairs empty out, one at a time, until a table that once felt cramped suddenly feels enormous, and you're sitting there with your coffee wondering exactly when everyone left.
But the table hasn't lost its power — it never lived in the wood or the chairs to begin with. It lives in what the table represents: an open invitation. A place where the food doesn't need to impress anyone and the conversation doesn't need to go deep. All that's actually required is showing up. Somewhere nearby, right now, there's a neighbor eating dinner alone, a friend still learning how to be a widow, a grandchild who doesn't yet know how much they need you. The table only does its job when someone has the nerve to pull out a chair and say: sit down, you belong here.

A simple step for today:
Invite someone into your kitchen this week — not out to a restaurant, into your actual kitchen. Coffee and toast is enough. A bowl of soup is enough. The chair matters more than the menu. Fill one empty seat.
Reflection question:
Whose empty seat have you been meaning to fill — and what's actually stopping you from setting the extra plate today?
That's your morning step.
